Returnee Assistance Grants

The Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans is very pleased to make available Returnee Assistance Grants to members of the Greater New Orleans Jewish Community.  The purpose of these criteria-based grants is to help members of our Jewish community return to the Greater New Orleans area. This is a one-time grant limited to one grant per household, utilizing restricted funds donated to our community from United Jewish Communities, the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, and a private Jewish foundation in New Jersey.  Funds are limited, and grants will be distributed on a first come basis through Jewish Family Service (504-831-8475).
The criteria to be eligible to apply for a Returnee Assistance Grant are as follows:
  • At least one Jewish adult, over the age of 21, in the household
  • The primary legal residence of the household was in Greater New Orleans area as of August 29, 2005
  • Proof of employment, viable business concerns, and/or or other ongoing sources of income
  • Proof of viable housing in the Greater New Orleans area

Returnee expenses covered under this grant for expenses incurred after December 16, 2005 with receipts required for reimbursement, include:

  • Moving expenses such as hiring a moving van, U-Haul truck or trailer, gas for return trip, hotels en route to the Greater New Orleansarea, and tickets for return transportation
  • Deposits and other one time moving expenses
  • Initial returnee expenses incurred in re-establishing residence in New Orleans such as household furnishings
  • If the purchase or expense has not been incurred already, then checks will be made payable directly to the vendor.
  • The Returnee Grants are separate and apart from the need-based financial assistance being distributed by Jewish Family Service.

Please note that the need-based financial assistance program will end on Friday, January 20, 2006 or when the funds run out for that program, whichever comes first.

For more information about the Returnee Assistance Grants, please contact JFS at 504-831-8475.
